An impressive set of design utility tools to measure distance, dimension, position, pick colors, test contrast and align elements, anywhere on your screen.
Hey PH!
🚀 I’m excited to introduce EpicRuler, a design utility app for Mac and Windows that I’ve been working on full-time for the past few months.
The app works over your entire screen, detects on-screen elements and provides various measurement, alignment and color picking features.
Main features:
📐 Measure the dimension or position of any on-screen element and the distance between elements
🧲 Add snappable horizontal and vertical guidelines anywhere on your screen
🎨 Pick colors in various formats (RGB, HEX, HSL etc.)
👓 Quickly check contrast between any two colors on your screen in accordance with WCAG 2.1
🔎 Inspect and highlight alignment issues with the loupe
🎦 Take screenshots with your measurements, guidelines, highlighted colors and comments
There are many other small features included, to learn more about them, please check out the website.
Now, let’s get into why I’ve built this app...
The short answer is that I needed it as a developer.
Of course, this is not the whole picture, as there are a few similar apps available on Mac already (xScope, PixelSnap, Sip), so I could have decided to used them instead of building a new app from scratch, but...
❓...what about Windows?
❌ There was no good alternative for those apps on Windows (I use both Mac and Windows).
✅ EpicRuler works on Mac and Windows too.
❓...what if you need both a color picker and an on-screen measurement tool?
❌ Previously you had to buy multiple apps.
✅ EpicRuler comes with both of those features and more.
What’s next?
While EpicRuler already comes with a nice feature set, there are many cool upcoming features, like:
• scrollable screenshots to capture the entire content of any window
• smart color code formats based on your app in use (e.g. if VS Code is in use, than the HEX format will be used)
• pick color gradients
• hold measurements in place even while scrolling
• ...your suggestions are welcomed
And finally...

💬 Also, please let me know in a comment your thoughts, questions and/or feedback about EpicRuler!
@matei_pavel thank you Pavel! Indeed, chrome extensions are limited to the browser, while EpicRuler works on your entire screen and is always at hand as it is running in the background and could be accessed using the shortcuts. :)
Has a great feature set and is enormously useful in my day to day life. Just hope it keeps receiving updates like a lot of these types of tools often seem to fizzle out.
