EcoSnap

Recycle your plastic better with Artificial Intelligence

EcoSnap tells you what, how, and where to recycle your items from a simple picture using Artificial Intelligence. You just take a picture of a plastic resin code, and it tells you how and where to recycle the item based on your location. We built this product in a week for Ben's Bites Hackathon.

Hey Product Hunt šŸ‘‹ Over the holidays I participated on a 1 week hackathon with @leonor_furtado and built EcoSnap. It was really fun (and intense), and thanks to our different skillsets (Leo as a data scientist, and me as a developer and designer) we were able to win on the Best of Open Source category, and third place overall šŸ† EcoSnap is an app that helps you recycle your plastic better. You just snap a picture of a plastic resin code (it's a tiny triangle with a number within), and the AI will recognize what it is to tell you how to recycle the item. Since we're both based in London, the app is mainly focused on advice about recycling in London and the UK as a whole. We'd like to support more regions in the future though. Here are some of its features: šŸ“ø Snap or upload a picture of a plastic code šŸ“± Install the PWA on your phone for easy access šŸ” Search for specific item to know how to dispose of it ā™»ļø Learn how to recycle effectively using AI 🄤 Keep track of how many plastic items you've recycled šŸŒ Change your location for specific advice ✨...and much more to come - all for free & no sign in needed! If you're curious about how we built the app, I shared some of the chaotic progress on my newsletter over here. The code is also entirely available on GitHub if you'd like to contribute or make your own AI-powered app.

I really enjoyed working on this with @alyssaxuu it's amazing how a simple and beautiful design and intuitive UI can bring AI functionality to life!!! If you are interested in how the AI element works, it uses a Tensorflow model built on hundreds of resin codes examples, I go into a bit more detail on our README: https://github.com/alyssaxuu/eco..., hit us up with any feedback or questions, start snapping and recycling šŸ˜€
