Have a greater say at work, school, and in your irl groups. Make your voice heard! ⠀ Democ is a non-profit platform for anonymous voting with co-workers, neighbors, members of your religion or political party, and groups of friends or family you invite.
@eugenemarage thanks for the question! @promothash1 and I have always liked to talk about the systems of government in our two countries and how we can make things better. One thing that stood out for me was how our systems of checks and balances was out of whack. Specifically, it seemed like democracy was on the ropes, and technology was partly catching the blame. We wanted to build tech that would reverse that trend. From there we started talking about broader concepts of democracy, what a world would look like where everyone really had a vote. Democ was born!
@promothash1@andrew_becker Nice! That's a good idea and the fact that you run it as a non-profit is a good argument that's in line with your values!
You present the inspiration as coming from a discussion about your respective governments; do you think your app could suit local governments needs? If yes, maybe you could mention it in your head titles of your website 🤔
@promothash1@eugenemarage I think other, smarter makers are working on governmental voting. My personal belief right now is that digital voting is not ready for the types of decisions that involve who gets the nuclear launch codes. Still, there is a place for this kind of non-official voting on very real issues, in terms of creating a public record of what the people want, and holding elected officials accountable to the will of the people.
@promothash1@andrew_becker No what I actually meant by local govermnment where small communities, municipalities, that could use your app to gather suggestions from their local inhabitants. Of course, the system won't work at a national/state level, but I think it could at the smallest level of administration.
Hi everybody!
@promothash1 and I are so happy to introduce Democ-- a little project designed to get people thinking about how we can use voting in places where we don't currently think about voting. To collectively amplify our voices and create the change we want to see in the world.
We are both romantic believers in the promise of the Internet, the decentralized chaotic old Internet that was going to, and still can, empower the little guy and change things for the better for so many people.
Democ is a platform that imperfectly enforces “one vote per person” and provides structure around who can vote on what issues. So you can create a group to vote at your school or work, with people who share your email domain, or you can vote on issues locally, or form a group to vote on the move during a protest...
We want people to rediscover the power of collective speech. To reframe voting as something you do all the time-- not just once a year in a library basement. Vote on things in your real life groups, with imperfect but maybe good-enough tech.
Democ, Inc is a non-profit and we're hoping others may want to help us take this project forward.
Thanks @chrismessina for hunting us! Please leave us your comments below or feel free to reach out to andrew@democ.io and strike up a conversation. Thanks for checking us out!
