It's really simple, just pulling from a long list of captions we wrote anticipating the types of images people would send in. There's a bit of image recognition to help narrow the caption list down. Then we run it through an API we built for our surf.co website and send back the image.
This blew up in the last two days. Over 1 million conversations in the past 48 hours! It was averaging just 150 per day before that.
