CarbonRunner

Shift AI training & CI/CD to the lowest carbon regions!

Shifting compute like AI training, CI/CD pipelines to data centers in the lowest-carbon regions for a 90% reduction in CO2. Running across multiple clouds (AWS, Azure and GCP), we use live grid data to shift workloads where emissions are lowest and cheapest

What do you think? …

We built CarbonRunner because the internet already accounts for nearly 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Compute and power demand is booming, and in the US alone, it’s set to quadruple by 2030. Most data centres are still in regions fuelled by fossil fuels, so the problem is growing fast. CarbonRunner automatically finds the cheapest and lowest-carbon regions to run your jobs, in real-time. It works across multi-cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP, and lets you control region preferences for data sovereignty and compliance. What’s good for the planet should also be great for business, with CarbonRunner, you can cut up to 90% of CO₂ emissions and save up to 25% on costs with just one line of code. Excited to hear your thoughts, feedback, and ideas for making the internet cleaner. Would you use it? Do you run lots of GitHub Actions? Train AI models?

Could there be a feature where jobs are automatically scheduled at times when the grid is greener, not just in different regions?

Dryden Williams

Good question! Why do you want to do this?

Scheduling is definitely possible:

  1. API: You can query our API for the best time to run a job. For example: “run this when the grid intensity in the UK is lower than 100gCO₂/kWh”. You’d just add args like `country=uk&maxIntensity=100`, and we can forecast when that threshold will be hit.

  2. GitHub Actions: You can add a label to your workflow file, but note GitHub requires the job to start within 24 hours or it’s cancelled. And in practice, scheduling isn’t quite as impactful because CarbonRunner automatically finds the lowest-CO₂ region in real time for you; our current average is 41gCO₂e/kWh.

Love how CarbonRunner auto-picks the greenest cloud regions for GitHub Actions—fr, that’s next-level smart for both the planet AND budgets. Super clever idea, team!
