I’m Anton Marchanka, the iOS developer behind Britmap — a new app that brings the rich history of York, UK to life with location-based videos and stories.
This was a passion project led by Freddy Orchard, who’s crafted some truly unique and compelling video content., and designed beautifully by Vlad Bokshic. I handled the iOS part, with some help from Kate Kulit — big thanks to her!
One fun technical detail: we made sure the videos play even in Silent Mode on iPhones using AVAudioSession. No need to ask users to turn sound on — it just works.

I am a life-long resident of the city of York and will always promote this great city, that is why I created this project. There is nowhere else in the world that can celebrate such a rich history.
However, fate connected myself, Anton Marchanka, Uladis Bokshic and Kate Kulik. The result is this Britmap - something never seen before across the country.
Uladis is a wizard on design and the Anton/Kate combo have exceeded my expectations by light years. None of this would exist without these three ultra-talented devs!
Hopefully this project can not only serve my city, for locals and tourists, but also encourage others around the globe to celebrate their rich history.
Stories are revived through technology - do not let them die out.

Britmap is great! I wish the app was available for other locations, for instance, London, Paris or Bobruysk.
