Hello there,
Dr. Goldberg here. I’m the Chief Scientific Officer behind Brainwell, along with being a neuropsychologist, cognitive neuroscientist, neurology professor at the NYU School of Medicine, and director of the Luria Neuroscience Institute. I’m happy to answer any questions you have surrounding the science behind Brainwell.
@doctor_goldberg Hey Elkhonen! So glad to see a brain games producer backed by real science. On that note, can you add some color to that for us plebs? Can you also tie your claims/results to actual outcomes?
@thetylerhayes Thank you, Tyler! This is an important question and I'm glad you asked it. You're absolutely right to be skeptical. We approached this project with the same healthy skepticism that underlies your question. Cognitive training is a young field, especially by academic standards, and as such it is rife with disagreements, uncertainties, and conflicting findings. It can be frustrating for consumers and scientists alike to wade through the snake oil and dubious claims in search of a scientifically valid product.
Here's what we've done: We came to this project with a great deal of experience in research and clinical neuropsychology. We based our games on well studied neuropsychological assessments and effective clinical tools. We scoured the literature to identify task paradigms that showed the most promise as candidates for cognitive training activities. We think that the product we've come up with represents the best knowledge available. That said, science never rests! We're taking our games into the lab to test their efficacy. We'll be constantly refining them, keeping what works, and throwing out what doesn't. Ultimately, we aim to be on the forefront of cognitive training research and our service will always be a reflection of that.
@doctor_goldberg Awesome! Are you publicly transparent about any specific metrics of that? e.g., is there a page I can point to and go "See? They are totally backed by science."
@thetylerhayes Within the app, each of our games is paired with a "What's the Science?" vignette (click the brain icon) that cites research relevant to the design of the game. We recognize that fellow scientists and discerning customers like yourself might crave even more thorough explanations and evidence of scientific validity. We love that! Transparency is a principal tenet in any science, so as research projects involving our games begin to move forward, we intend to publish our findings in comprehensive detail through traditional, peer-reviewed outlets.
Thanks for checking us out!
Building Brainwell has been a 3+ year project which featured a unique collaboration between game developers from an industry-leading studio, TikGames, and a team of neuroscientists led by world-renowned neuropsychologist and neuroscientist Dr. Elkhonon Goldberg. What we’ve created is a comprehensive brain-training application that is really fun and engaging to use, while being backed by real research that aims to improve cognitive function across multiple key cognitive domains.
The app features a ton of different games, over 50 at the moment, as well as a proprietary (and patent pending) algorithm that customizes each workout to user specific goals and performance. You can compare how your scores stack up to worldwide averages, challenge friends, and track improvement. Each game features the science and research behind the design, so you can see which areas of the brain the game aims to strengthen.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
"Backed by real science."
YES. Finally.
I only have a neuroscience degree, not practicing, but it's always bothered me that Lumosity and others aren't backed by science. And they make pseudo- claims implying they are. If I were a betting man I'd say that will come back to them soon enough.
