Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I'm thrilled to share Blankie with you all! As someone with ADHD who struggles with focus, I was inspired by the incredible Linux app Blanket but couldn't find anything like it for Mac that was free, native and open-source. So I built what I needed and went way deeper than expected!
What started as a simple ambient sound mixer is now:
⚡ Truly native SwiftUI with no Electron-bloat and native media control
🌍 Support for 7 languages with community contributions via GitHub
📱 Coming to iOS/iPadOS/visionOS this summer (TestFlight beta is live!)
The best part? Blankie is actually free! No accounts to register, no app analytics/tracking and no need to ever give me your email or credit card for more features. All of Blankie will be free forever!
What I'm most excited about is how Blankie is becoming the community-driven project I hoped it could be. Blankie has already had 5 contributors help with translations, feature requests are coming in from all directions and I even built some custom scripts other developers can use for their own localization needs.
What's coming next? In addition to more devices, I'm working on custom sound imports, menubar support and AirPlay.
Questions about building a native Mac app, localizing SwiftUI or just want to chat about what sounds help you focus? I'm here for it! 🚀
And a VERY big thanks to @chrismessina for hunting Blankie!

@codybrom congrats on the launch!
With iOS development underway, how does Blankie overlap with iOS 18.4's native Ambient Music?
Blankie
@chrismessina Great question! As someone with ADHD, I'm often multi-tasking AND multi-listening. iOS 18.4's Ambient Music is cool but it's online-only and can't play alongside other apps. Background Sounds have been around long on Mac and iOS, but Apple offers a limited number of sounds and you can't layer or combine them.
My goal with bringing Blankie to iOS/iPadOS/visionOS (and maybe even tvOS one day!) is to bring more options and more control to the sounds you have available, and to always make them available offline. I also want users to be able to enjoy Blankie at the same time that they listen to music, podcasts, or watch videos. On Mac this is trivial, but it's a little more complex on iOS/iPadOS.
On iOS, Blankie will make use of the AVAudioSession library's mixWithOthers category which will allows it to plays nicely with other audio sources rather than competing with them. Apple's own Background Sounds feature works in this way, but the only trade off is that iOS/iPadOS doesn't give non-exclusive audio playback methods access to the Now Playing or media controls of Bluetooth accessories. I'm still playing with it and might give users the option to choose whatever playback method they like best. But with the mixWithOthers route I'm exploring home screen and Control Center widgets, Shortcuts and Dynamic Island as possible alternatives to control it from the background.
Thanks for the thoughtful question and for hunting Blankie!

@codybrom awesome, thanks for the thorough answer! I learned something! :)
i love this name so much that i used the product just bc of it!
Love this, Cody! 🎧 Simple, offline, and beautifully focused—Blankie feels like the antidote to today’s noisy, subscription-filled apps. The native macOS integration and open-source approach are a huge plus. Perfect for deep work or winding down. Big congrats on the launch! 👏🌿
