Hey Product Hunt 👋! We are excited to share Alter with this great community!
Why we built this:
While working on our own startup ideas we noticed how difficult it was to find good business names, especially since they needed an accompanying domain name in today's high-tech world.
The problem is that finding a great domain name is like looking for a needle in the haystack. Most are already taken and existing domain owners want outrageous prices in return.
This is why we built Alter, a domain marketplace that connects entrepreneurs with premium business names.
About our product:
Names found on the marketplace are priced at market value, come prepackaged with a .com domain and even a professionally designed logo. 🙌
Each name is carefully hand-picked by our team based on a number of factors including its meaning, length, pronounceability, memorability, and its overall brand potential to make the business naming process super easy for entrepreneurs. 💡
Would love to hear your thoughts! :)
@devenpatel Great yet handy product - to sell a full packed brand, with logo, domain, and basic branding. Service is handy for the early-stage startups and founders who want to test quickly check their MVP or idea!
@stanui Thanks for the compliments, Stan! With millions of startups now competing for customer attention, we think the brand is more important than ever before to stand out from the crowd.
@danieljames Thanks for the feedback, Daniel!
The prices may seem high at first glance but you would be surprised how much existing owners actually want for their domains. When I was looking for domains for my own startup ideas, existing owners typically wanted 5-10X these prices, if not more. That's exactly why we built Alter.
Our job is to balance the expectations of both buyers and sellers. We use a number of factors to appraise the domain including its meaning, length, brand potential, and comparable sales. Our average listing price is around $2-3k which is pretty good value considering how important a business name is for a new company today when you're trying to stand out from the crowd. It's extremely hard to get noticed with a mediocre name when there are millions of competing businesses around the world.
In fact, this is why a lot of the famous companies ended up changing their names eventually. Some examples:
Cadabra » Amazon
Sound of Music » Best Buy
Research in Motion » Blackberry
AuctionWeb » eBay
BackRub » Google
DrivUrSelf » Hertz
