@jleebiz There is an article in the related links section that discusses some of the differences which may make it better in some ways. I've invited the Airmail team here as well. Maybe they will chime in.
@erictwillis@jleebiz Hey, I'm actually a part of their support team, so I'll act as a spokesperson. One way I'd say it's better than the default Mail app is that it works. In my personal use I feel it's not only faster but cleaner, especially on 2.0
@zaccoffman wait, what? Because it works? Look, I'm an Airmail user. I could sing its praises. But it doesn't make sense that someone who does support for it can only say it is better because "it works". Mail.app "works".
@f I agree, my answer was quite short. I feel Airmail provides the best experiencing in handling email than any other client. Our streamlined unified inbox is presented in such a clean way that email doesn't feel like a chore. The real selling point is the speed, I don't know others' opinion on email, but the faster I can open read + reply, the happier I am, Airmail blazes for me through my 6+ accounts (all with 10k plus emails).
Hopefully that clears up a little more than my previous "it works" statement.
I've been using Airmail since the first version. Honestly I preferred the UI and detail on the old version more than the current one (purely talking aesthetics)
@brianbreslin I've heard this from a few fellow users so far. I was taken aback slightly when I first saw it. The more I used it with Yosemite it just felt... right?
@brianbreslin Same, the re-design did Airmail no good.
Plus I don't use any of the "new" features, such as extensions, markdown mail composing, or the older one to treat mails as "to-dos".
I just want a sleek desktop (for offline availability) mail client to combine a plethora of IMAP/Exchange mailboxes into one unified inbox.
That's what Sparrow had done so well. Airmail for me always had some hickups, like that the global search scope didn't cover the Gmail accounts for a long, long time in 1.4. (Just to be clear: That issue is solved!)
I'm hesitant to upgrade, right now.
@boettges The global search scope for Gmail was a bit of downer for us for a while. I can say in 2.0 with the updated engine and database management it works flawlessly for me (that is for an account with 22,000+ in the Gmail/GoogleApps account and 46k in my iCloud email). While my opinion may be a little bias, I didn't think I would use the extensions for much, but it has sped up my workflows of emailing photos/PDFs as it utilizes Yosemite's Sharesheet styling.
@zaccoffman@boettges i have over 100k emails across my gmail accounts in airmail, and honestly i end up loading gmail in browser or mailplane to search a single account at a time as the results in airmail for search were spotty.
