AbstractOps State Compliance
Put your state compliance on autopilot
Manage your state account details in one place. Register for payroll tax in new states in 5 minutes, not 5 hours. Resolve penalty notices, annual reports and other snail mail: simply upload them to the platform and watch them get taken care of, like magic.
Hello ProductHunt! We're excited to launch AO State Compliance for GA access. Big thanks to @maccaw for hunting us.
If you run a distributed team in the US (so much more common post-pandemic!), you've probably run into the maze of state-by-state regulation and compliance.
😵💫 Every time you hire someone in a new state, you have to register in somewhere between 1 and 7 agencies.
😖 Sometimes in a certain order. And sometimes you can do it right away, other times you have to wait.
🤑 And if you do it wrong or enter a typo, you'll get angry letters by snail mail from a government agency, demanding hundreds or thousands of dollars.
It's crazy that there’s no API into the state of California or Illinois.
Until now.
Over the last 2+ years, we’ve worked with 100+ elite companies (like On Deck, Maven, Commsor, Airplane), modeled 2,000+ fields across 150+ agencies, completed hundreds of registrations in all 50 states, and seen 4,000+ notices. And now, AO State Compliance lets you...
📆 TRACK your states in one place: account details, files / notices, issues, and risk. Includes Registered Agent services, annual report, and franchise tax filings.
📝 FILE in new states: we’ve turned a 5-10 hour filing process into a 5-minute form.
🪄 RESOLVE regulatory notices: our platform ingests and resolves snail mail notices, claims, or filing requests, like magic.
Customers have told us this problem is the "bane of their existence", but once they know that we can solve this for them, our favorite recent quote is "Seriously, I have never been so excited about a product/service in my career :)".
Join them! Sign up, set up your account, and submit your first registration in <10 mins at AbstractOps.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be adding the ability to integrate your payroll, receive proactive notifications and alerts, manage and assign issues, and more in State Compliance.
And beyond? State Compliance is just the beginning. Integrate your broader operational stack (payroll, contracts, cap table and more) to unlock powerful visibility and automation, and better end-to-end employee experiences. Do away with "human APIs" so that you can stay lean while growing. And yes, there'll be some AI delight sprinkled in ;).
Besides the PH deal, we’re delighted to partner with some of the best companies in the space: if you’re affiliated with On Deck, Craft Ventures, Hustle Fund, or a customer of Mercury, Pulley, or Puzzle, get 5% off AbstractOps for the first year. Please consult their perks page for more details, or email us at sales@abstractops.com!
We're excited to give you back your time, so that you can focus on what matters: your product and customers.
amped about this
@haridigresses what does your payroll or peo typically handle for you and what do you need to do on your own or with this service from abstractops?
@smalter great question!
Payroll handles quarterly tax filings, but
- does not register in states for you
- does not touch anything with secretary of state / registered agent / annual report / franchise tax
- leaves it to you to deal with state notices (penalties, billing statements, unemployment claims, and a lot more)
- sometimes, payroll tools also mess up their filings, which in itself generates snail mail notices to resolve
- does not de-register when you no longer have activity in a state
PEOs do more -- they reduce the need for registration / deregistration because the employee is hired via the PEO entity. However
- some states are not PEO-reporting... which means that the employer actually does have to register (it would be no different from standard payroll in those cases)
- they don't handle secretary of state / RA / etc. in circumstances where it's necessary (which is a state-by-state litmus test)
- finally, PEOs can be a great solution but they do come with their own tradeoffs; they're not suitable for 200+ person companies; they restrict the breadth of benefits you can offer; and they're expensive.
Overall, payroll takes care of about 30% and PEOs about 60%. But that still leaves a good chunk of work remaining in state reporting & compliance, which ops / HR / finance team members get stuck troubleshooting!
I tried to distill further, but... as you can tell, it's incredibly case by case and nuanced. To expect every founder / exec / team to know the ins and outs of this is just not fair or reasonable.
And, due to remote work, it's blown up in scale, with every distributed team. That's why we built this, so that teams don't even have to think about it... they just put it on autopilot via AO.
